Separation Techniques Aim: To separate a miscellanea of compact filings, CaCO3, NaCl into their pure substances. Apparatus: 2x 150ml beakers 1x 150Ml Beaker MagnetMatches Evaporating basinBunsen Burner weeweeFunnel Retort standFunnel Paper Sieve cast-iron Filings CaCO3NaCl tripod gauze Mat Cling WrapSaftey Goggles Method: 1.Gather Apparatus and the mixture of Iron, CaCO3 and NaCl. 2.Weigh beaker and mixture. 3.Use magnetic separation to remove Iron filings. 4.Set up retort stand and add filtrate paper to the tense funnel. 5.Put the rest of the mixture into the filter funnel and add water slowly to filter issue the water and dissolved NaCl. 6.Evaporate the filtrate to dry outness. 7.Put the CaCo3 into a dish and put on a hotplate to dry to a pure substance. 8.Once all substances are in their pure form measure. 24 x 100 = 41.6% Iron Filings = 4.83/12.24 x 100 = 39.5% NaCl =3.33/12.24 x 100 = 27.2% The procedure we undertook was not very accurate as we ended up with more than 12.24g of mixture. We ended up with 13.25g. The method acting showed errors as we may not have measured flop or undertook the right method to separate the substances. These affected the results as the results are then inaccurate. To better accuracy and reduce errors we could improve the method by making sure to measure properly to get accurate results.
